Two New Carriers To Serve Swiss Lugano-Agno Airport. - 25/08/2003
Swiss News Digest
Two new carriers will serve the Lugano-Agno airport in the Swiss southeastern Italian speaking canton of Ticino, as of October 2003, it was reported on August 22, 2003.
Baboo Airways, based in Geneva, southwestern Switzerland, will launch three daily flights from Geneva to Lugano as of October 28, 2003. The new company will employ 15 employees at the beginning and plans to double its staff by March 2004. Baboo Airways, whose director is Julian Cook, plans to further develop its activities at the airport by introducing flights, linking Lugano to Marseilles, Saint-Tropez and Venice.
Another airline company, named Darwin Airlines, has announced its intention to serve the airport as of October 2003. Darwin Airlines, which was created by the founder of Swiss airline Crossair, Moritz Suter, plans also to fly three daily flights from Lugano to Geneva. Initially the company will serve the route by a Saab 2000 plane. By the end of March 2004, Darwin Airlines is to have two other planes and plans to launch daily flights to Rome and London. The carrier is also considering launching direct flights from Lugano to Paris, Barcelona, Nice, Venice, Vienna, Frankfurt, Munich, Prague and Ljubljana once or twice weekly.
The move of the two carriers came after Switzerland's flag carrier Swiss International Air Lines, known as Swiss, decided to reduce the number of its flights to the airport. On July 11, 2003, Swiss said it would continue servicing only the route from Zurich, northern Switzerland, to Lugano. The decision of Swiss was to lead to 80 jobcuts at the Lugano-Agno airport, which is some 40 pct of the airport's staff.
(Editor's note: Crossair was a subsidiary of the former Swiss flag carrier Swissair, which went bankrupt in early October 2001. Crossair replaced Swissair after the bankruptcy as the country's flag carrier and was later renamed to Swiss.)
